Children are not small adults
Childhood cancer is rare, and over 60% of children with cancer are treated as part of a clinical trial. For that reason a child should be treated at a specialist cancer facility, under a pediatric hematologist-oncologist — not in a general oncology department.
A multidisciplinary team around your child
Treatment at our partner pediatric centers involves child development professionals, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, social workers and psychologists, together with support services for the whole family. Decisions are made through shared decision making: families and doctors choose therapies together.
Types of treatment
Surgery
Removal of the tumor with a negative margin, performed by pediatric surgical teams.
Systemic drug therapy
Chemotherapy and immunotherapy, given intravenously or orally.
Radiation therapy
External-beam radiation or brachytherapy — used cautiously in young children because of the risk to healthy tissue and of secondary cancers.
Bone marrow / stem cell transplant
Allogeneic (ALLO) and autologous (AUTO) transplantation in dedicated pediatric transplant units.
